The MacMillan Charity ride is held every year and generates sponsorship
money for the MacMillan Cancer Research Organisation, RAYNET provide
safety communications and this year provided bike and rider transport for
broken bikes by Francis G6VUI and Jeff G7ASX.
This was one of the first events this year that made good use
of APRS whereby control could see the location and progress of mobile
stations. APRS was also used to transmit waypoints for mobile deployment.
APRS was found to be very useful is that it cut down voice radio traffic that
would normally contain deployment and progress information.
Operation was from 2 controls - each controlling a specific area, fixed bases,
mobiles on patrol and a 2 wheel patrol (Keith G1VHG) which proved very useful
in some of the complicated and winding country road sections. It was also a good
opportunity for the group to try out a new trailer mast,
excellently prepared by Rob G6DUN.
