UI-View Page

The Dorset group has done quite a lot of work with checking out the operational aspects of using APRS and UI-View in the field for RAYNET operations.

Some initial views:-

  • APRS is ideal for locating stations
  • APRS can be used for sending out waypoints for routing etc
  • APRS in not overly practical for watching and guiding individual vehicles
  • Careful consideration must be paid to traffic and interference from other VHF stations (and RF to PC problems)

The group did use of APRS on the MacMillan Cycle Event where APRS was used
to monitor the progress of vehicles and APRS did cut down the amount of radio traffic.

UI-View can be downloaded from the UI-View wesite (see links page, a Dorset map is available and some specific maps are available from the events page (Dorset Members Only).

You can also run APRS on WIN CE (iPAQ etc), some european Maps are available.
